When Marcus first walked up to our park on a cold October morning, he told us he’d never touched a skateboard in his life. He was 14, quiet, and wasn’t sure he belonged. That’s a feeling a lot of our kids share when they first show up.
But something happened that day that we see over and over again at Pushing Together — skateboarding broke the ice. Within an hour, Marcus was pushing around the flat ground, laughing when he fell, and cheering for other kids he’d just met.
Fast forward six months: Marcus shows up early every Saturday. He’s been learning kickflips, filming clips with his phone, and — most importantly — he’s started showing up to our volunteer sessions to help younger kids learn the basics.
“Before this, I didn’t really have anywhere to go on weekends. Now I look forward to it every week.” — Marcus, 14
This is why we do what we do. Skateboarding isn’t just a sport — it’s a way to build confidence, community, and something to look forward to. If you’d like to support more kids like Marcus, consider making a donation or volunteering at one of our sessions.
